A Trust Waikato trustee since 2012, Alan is of Malaysian–Chinese descent and immigrated to New Zealand in 1975. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants ANZ and has a Bachelor of Management Studies (with Honours) from the University of Waikato. Alan is also a CMA (Cost & Management Accountant) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries.
Alan founded the Houston Technology Group, a technology group with branches in Tauranga and Hamilton, in 1986.
Alan has also served as chairman on the board of Te Kete Putea General Partner. This was a company owned by all the community trusts in New Zealand and provided grants management systems for all the member trusts.
Having grown up in abject destitution, Alan feels well-equipped to understand and assist community groups working to break cycles of deprivation within marginalised communities. He firmly believes that education is pivotal in the eradication of poverty as well as poor health and can dramatically improve overall life chances. While acknowledging that the link between poverty and education is multifaceted, he has seen enough examples within his own circle of friends and family in Malaysia and elsewhere to resolutely argue that the attainment of education is one of the biggest contributors towards getting out of economic hardship.
Married to Jill who hails from rural Canterbury, the couple have two wonderful daughters who are encouraged to celebrate cultural and racial diversity. In his scarce spare time, Alan indulges in gardening (with a particular interest in propagating dahlias) and graphics design.
