Abstract
Not-for-Profit (NFP) sector and volunteering play an important role in our community and because of financial and other constraints, NFP organisations might not be serving their clients efficiently and effectively.

Between June and August 2001 questionnaires were sent to 1000 NFP organisations in Waikato covering different sizes and sectors. The questionnaire asked NFP organisations about their existing problems and training needs.

Due to the diverse nature and background of the surveyed NFP organisations, respondents refected a number of problems in various degrees. The major problems identified were in Marketing/Promotions, Funding, Volunteer Recruitment and Motivation, and latest Computer/IT areas.

Relevant training needs are required but due to financial constraints and other constraints NFP organisations require a more flexible and specific training programme so as to improve services to the community.

Conclusion
It is recommended that the Waikato Institute of Technology consider offering a Certificate in Business Studies (Not-for-Profit) stream. Such a certificate will have more options than existing streams, to suit the needs of the participants. Core courses would need to be identified, including a special NFP project. Some existing courses may need to be redesigned, however some common business courses (e.g. Business Communications) will still be important. Online delivery could be a future option. Guests speakers from the NFP sector could be invited to participate.
