Abstract
TODAY NOT TOMORROW was a project undertaken in 2003 by a group of six Waikato Institute of Technology second year nursing students and Tutor Dr Virginia Fairnie in partnership with the Co-ordinator of the Cervical Screening Programme.

The purpose of the project was to gain an understanding of the Somali community health beliefs that could inform future health promotion initiatives.

Information gained through the project was from key informant interviews and literature reviewed.

Various themes emerged from the interviews and literature related to the issue that today’s health events are the priority as opposed to what may happen tomorrow, that Somali men want to be involved in the planning stages as the value of unity was important, language barriers were sited also. Transportation was a further barrier to accessing health programmes by Somali people.

From this information recommendations were formulated: that collaboration occur with the Somali community for planning future health promotion initiatives, that further research into views and opinions of women in relation to cervical screening be explored and that a review of current publicity is undertaken.
