Abstract
As a group of enrolled nurses, we have undertaken a mental health community project as part of the course requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing Degree with the Waikato Institute of Technology. This project was in partnership with our stakeholders Rhee Duthie-Rarere the youth mental health promoter at Toi Te Ora, Dallas Honey the media advocate for Toi Te Ora, and John Barker, Tauranga mental health services consumer advisor.
Our group met with many community youth organisations, gathering information related to the services that they provided. From the information we gained, it appeared that youth in our community have three major issues related to mental health. These were: suicide risk, drug and alcohol abuse and sexual health. Those organisations that are providing mental health promotion programmes within our community had people who are passionate about working to empower young people to make positive changes in their lives.
The key recommendations from our findings were:
- There is a need for a current youth directory
- Services could be extended to meet the needs of young people aged 8-12 years
