Abstract
This report was undertaken by a group of seven-second year Bachelor of Nursing students from the Waikato Institute of Technology.
Te Whare o Te Ata Community Center is our project partner in the spirit and practice of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.
The purpose of the project was to explore the issue of road safety in the Fairfield area of Hamilton.
The area of enquiry was narrowed to children under the age of twelve years as most collisions involving cars and children occur on urban roads before and after school.
Key informant interviews were held with representatives of law enforcement, education and local community people interested in children’s safety.
A key finding from these interviews was the level of concern for children’s safety and that children’s safety has recently been compromised.
Literature reviewed emphasises the need for partnership and coalition between community, local and central government to ensure successful outcomes for tamariki/children.
Recommendations made include that further research be undertaken and that Marae-based education be explored.
