Abstract
This research examined audit recommendations made in 2001 and assited staff with a pathway towards a quality assurance process for their services.
This project was carried out by three nursing students from the Waikato Institute of Technology as part of their Community Health paper. The project was completed in association with Malcolm House; a Health Waikato community based mental health service set in River Road, Hamilton. Based loosely on a clubhouse model, Malcolm House is primarily focussed on psychosocial and rehabilitative skills for people with an enduring mental disorder.
Staff at Malcolm House requested assistance with work towards reaching the audit recommendations, which were completed in 2001. This report provides a background of the service offered at Malcolm House, the implications of the Ottawa Charter and the Treaty of Waitangi, key issues pertaining to the mental health services in relation to Malcolm House, audit processes and the specific audit for Malcolm House.
The process undertaken to complete the project entailed familiarisation with the service and where it fits into mental health services at Health Waikato, interviews with key people and analysis of documents. The report concludes with recommendations, which can be considered by Mental Health staff of Health Waikato in their future efforts to achieve quality assurance.
