Abstract
This evaluation of the HOMESAFE programme was undertaken by a group of second year nursing from Waikato Institute of technology with the assistance from their Tutor Alison Garlick.

The group worked in collaboration with Kate Dallas, Health Promoter from the Population Health Unit a division of the Waikato District Health Board and key stakeholders. The aim was to evaluate the HOMESAFE programme – a collaborative community initiative recently developed within the Hamilton area to promote youth safety. To effectively evaluate this programme, it was necessary to review relevant literature and to conduct a number of focus groups with members of the target population – youth aged between 15 to 24 years.

Three focus groups were held with different youth groups from around the Hamilton area in order to collect primary data. Also reviewed were three other HOMESAFE Project operating in Wellington, Nelson and Whangarei.

The information from the focus groups helped the group to evaluate the success of the Hamilton HOMESAFE programme and enabled recommendations to be formulated.

The project found that the HOMESAFE programme has not been successful in Hamilton but that it is a good idea and with improved promotion may be successful in the future.

Group/s Associated with the Research:
Stakeholders of the HOMESAFE programme. Key stakeholders are, Hamilton Taxis, Safe City Co-ordinator, Youth Liaison Advisor, Hamilton Youth Council and Hamilton City Beat Police.
