Abstract
In order to better understand and make provision for the needs of people with in our communities we need to be aware of the issues they face. Older people can, as a result of their ageing, have specific requirements that need to be dealt with in particular ways. Varying factors bring with them varying issues that may not be fully recognised or truly understood by others not experiencing the same set of circumstances. The purpose of this research has been to gain some insight into the way the provision of care is both broached with and delivered to older people whose age related physical debility requires they accept some form of assistance.

The data was collected using open ended questions intended to prompt a frank discussion of peoples lived experiences. An in depth, qualitative snap shot of the lives of three older women, aged 77, 78 and 83, all of whom were going through the process of discussing or experiencing care as a result of age related physical deterioration, was collated in this way.

A qualitative content analysis was used to ascertain reoccurring features across the lived experiences of the participants. General trends were established and core themes identified for further in depth analysis.
The analysis showed that active listening, valuing the opinions of others, and supporting the need for autonomy, choice and maintenance of independence in people’s lives enhanced the feeling of wellbeing of the older people going through the process of negotiating or receiving care. The analysis also highlighted the importance of making preparation for ones ageing, including but not limited to health, finance, and care related issues.
