Abstract
This document evolved when three enrolled nursing students, doing their Bachelor of Nursing at the Waikato Institute of technology, worked with Malcolm House staff to develop a referral pack, which would help to reduce the numbers of inappropriate referrals and subsequent delays for people on the waiting lists who could benefit from membership.
The goal of the project was to develop a pack with information that would be clear, concise and user-friendly for possible community agencies who could refer clients on to Malcolm House: E.g. Salvation Army and W.I.N.Z. This took us on a journey of researching information, evaluating available resources and compiling an information pack.
The process involved reviewing relevant literature on the Ottawa Charter and Treaty of Waitangi to support the understanding of a Health Promotion project. We also viewed the Blueprint for Mental Health and the Mental Health Standards, which gave us a better understanding for implementing this literature to our document. We also incorporated the “Recovery Model” as part of our literature search to gather more information and knowledge about this process.
This assignment has been put together in a report format to display the process of our project. It is believed by all involved, that this project has improved our knowledge and understanding of mental health, by combining theory and practice as required in this Community Health Project.
A pamphlet containing referral information was produced and trialed for use by all organisations that might refer people to Malcolm House and is awaiting production and distribution.
