Abstract
The purpose of this project was to explore strategies that support staff link theory to practice in mental health care settings. This project was undertaken by five nursing students from the Waikato Institute of Technology as part of their Community Health paper. The project was completed in association with Richmond Fellowship in Hamilton.
Richmond Fellowship in an organisation providing psychosocial and rehabilitative support for people with enduring mental disorders.

This report provides a background of the philosophy and service offered by Richmond Fellowship. To support the project the implications of health promotion and the Treaty of Waitangi are discussed. Key issues pertaining to the mental health services, stigma and discrimination, the recovery process and strategies for the application of theory to practice are discussed.

Two findings from the report are that the Rehabilitative Model emphasises the priority of treating the significance of the illness rather than the illness itself and that staff training to meet identified learning needs has a positive effect on both the knowledge and confidence levels of staff working in ‘care homes’
